Showing a Child the Responsability in Pet Ownership

Every household is different. For me it was not that I didn't want a dog or could we have a dog. The real question in my mind was my daughter ready for such a large responsibility? Here is one of many ways to broach the subject I found useful.

First, ask the reasoning behind the question. More often than not as parents we assume that a "dog" means a "dog". Many times we have assumed and not heard what the child really was saying.

Second, make a list explaining the reason given with your child. Try to get a good understanding of what your child is thinking and feeling. Perhaps Suzie at school just got dog so dogs, dogs, dogs are on the radar, so to speak.

Third, offer to go to the library, bookstore, or online to research pet ownership. It may be that a dog is out of the question, or a puppy may be a more suitable addition to your home. Look into the responsibility, needs of a prospective family addition, and create a big picture for your child to understand.

Discovering what (if any animal) will be a good fit for your home is sure to bring good communication and many lifelong lessons.
